Common VinLocate terms

Storage, section, slot, rack, bin, wine case, depth and coordinates — every VinLocate word, defined once.

VinLocate has a vocabulary of its own: a storage holds sections, a section holds slots, and a slot holds one bottle. Everything else on this page hangs off those three words.

Requires a paid plan. Free collections get no VinLocate at all, so none of these terms appear. Home → your collection name → Collection settings → Subscription shows what yours includes.

The words for places

Term

What it means

VinLocate

The 3D model of your own cellar or fridge that you build inside InVintory, so the app can point you at a bottle

Storage

The umbrella word for a cellar or a fridge. Every bottle in your collection belongs to one

Section

One physical unit inside a storage — a rack, a bin or a wine case. On a fridge the app calls it a shelf instead, to match the hardware

Slot

A single position that holds one bottle. Racks have slots; bins do not

Racks, bins and cases

These are the three kinds of section, and picking the right one decides how precise an answer you get later.

Type

Holds

When you locate a bottle

Rack

One bottle per fixed slot

We point you at the exact slot

Bin

Any number of bottles, piled together

We point you at the bin

Wine case

A case kept intact as one unit

We point you at the case

The app puts it this way on the Racks vs. Bins panel: bins are the right choice when bottles are stacked on each other and shift as you pull them out. Racks are the right choice when you want an exact answer.

The words for a position

Term

What it means

Column

How many bottles wide a section is, left to right

Row

How many rows tall it is, stacked upward

Depth

How many bottles deep it is, front to back. Depth 2 means one bottle behind another

Coordinate

The three numbers written together, as in R3, C5, D1. It shows on the bottle and can be printed onto shelf labels

Bottle direction

Which way the cork faces — Towards, Away, Left, Right, Up, Down, Tilt Up, Tilt Down. Purely how the bottle is drawn; it never changes where one is found

Slot type

The shape of a section — Flat, Lattice, Horizontal, Vertical, Tilted, Grid and so on. Pick whichever looks like the real thing

Two things worth being clear on. A section is a whole rack or shelf; a slot is one bottle-sized hole inside it. And a bottle with no slot is not lost — it sits in your collection exactly as normal, and the Without a 3D position filter lists every one of them.
