How to reorganise a storage without losing bottle positions

Renaming, reordering, renumbering and switching views never move a bottle — the five actions that do clear a 3D position, and the one that does it silently.

Renaming, reordering, renumbering and switching views never move a bottle. Only five things clear a bottle's 3D position, and four of them warn you first.

Requires a paid plan. Sections and 3D positions are part of VinLocate, so a free collection has none of this to reorganise.

The fifth one is silent. Changing a bottle's cellar or fridge from the edit screen clears its 3D position with no warning — the bottle arrives unplaced. Move it from inside the 3D view instead and it keeps a position throughout.

What survives what

What you do

What happens to positions

Rename a section

Nothing moves

Move Up / Move Down

Nothing moves — the list order changes, not the slots

Row / Column view, Jump to Row

Nothing moves — these change only what you are looking at

Change the Coordinate Origin

Every coordinate in the collection is renumbered; no bottle moves

Tap a slot that already holds a bottle

The button reads Replace — that bottle is pulled out and rejoins the list waiting to be placed

Duplicate a section, or a whole fridge

An empty copy of the shape — removed slots included, bottles never

Modify a section to fewer rows or columns

⚠️ Only bottles left without a slot are unplaced. Pulling out 3 bottles warns first

Remove bottle slots where a bottle sits

⚠️ That bottle is unplaced. Same warning

Delete a section

⚠️ Its bottles are unplaced but stay in your collection. You type CONFIRM

Change a bottle's storage from the edit screen

⚠️ Cleared, with no warning

Delete a storage and Transfer the bottles

⚠️ Cleared; the bottles themselves move to the storage you pick

Filter your collection by Without a 3D position to round up anything left unplaced.

Reshaping a section safely

  1. Open the storage, find the section and tap its menu.

  2. Tap Modify. The 3D view opens with Column, Row and Depth steppers.

  3. Set the new size and tap Save.

  4. If a bottle no longer has a slot, Pulling out 3 bottles appears — Cancel costs nothing.

Open a storage → Sections → ⋯ → Modify → Save

If Modify, Duplicate and Delete are missing from a section's menu, that storage is one we built for you: only Rename stays, and wine cases remain editable.

Android and web

On app.invintory.com a section's menu has the same Rename, Modify, Duplicate and Delete, greyed out on a storage we built.

On Android, Rename, Duplicate and Delete work; Move Down and Add bottles appear but do nothing yet, and there is no Modify. Reorder and reshape on iPhone, iPad or the web.
