Why did my collection value change?

What a market price is, where ours come from, why a shop charges more, and what makes your collection value move.

Your collection value is the market value of your bottles, added together. It moves when market prices update, when exchange rates change, and when bottles come and go. This article explains what a market price is, and why it is often lower than the price in a shop.

🍷 Did your value drop recently? We updated where our market prices come from. They now come from market data from Wine Labs and Liv-Ex, which sits lower than the retail asking prices we used before. Your bottles did not lose value. The number is now a more accurate measure of what they sell for.

What a market price is

A market price is the low end of what a wine sells for across the whole market. It is not the price on a shop shelf.

  • Liv-Ex uses the lowest price listed by leading fine wine merchants around the world.

  • Wine Labs also sits near the low end of what the wine sells for.

Think of it as the least it would cost to replace your bottles from a good source. InVintory does not sell wine, so the market value is a measure of what your wine is worth, not an offer to buy it at that price.

Why can't I buy it at that price?

Usually you can't walk into a shop and pay the market price, and that is expected. Each shop sets its own price, and it is almost always higher:

  • Every retailer adds its own markup.

  • The lowest listing can come from a merchant in another country. Shipping and import costs add to the price where you live.

  • Taxes and duty change a lot with the country and region you buy in.

  • The same bottle can cost very different amounts in two shops in the same city.

So a shop price above our market value does not mean our price is wrong. The market price is the floor, and shop prices sit above it.

Where our prices come from

Each wine's price is for its exact vintage and bottle size. Open the wine's market value to see a tag that tells you which kind of price it is.

Where the price comes from

Verified market value

Wine Labs or Liv-Ex has a price for this vintage. The provider's logo sits beside the tag.

Estimated market value

No provider has a price for this exact vintage, so we worked one out from other prices we hold.

Custom market value

Someone on your collection set this price. It always comes before ours.

What makes your value move

  • Market prices update. We refresh prices as new market data arrives, so your total can move even when you changed nothing.

  • Exchange rates change. Prices are converted into your currency at the current rate.

  • Bottles come and go. Adding or removing a bottle changes the total.

  • Bottles without a price. These count at your collection's average bottle price, so that average moves with the rest of your collection.

What you paid for your bottles is never part of the market value. Understanding your total collection value explains how the total is worked out.

If a price looks wrong

No source is perfect, and now and then a price is linked to the wrong wine. You have two options:

  • Set your own price. Open the wine, tap the Market Value card, tap the bottle size, enter your price and tap Save. Tap Reset to go back to ours at any time.

  • Tell us. Email support@invintory.com from the address you sign in with. Include the wine and vintage, and we will check the price at its source.

Collection → tap a wine → Market Value → tap a size → Save
