How to scan a restaurant wine list

Photograph a restaurant's list in a Vincent chat and get a recommendation from what is actually on it.

Photograph a restaurant's wine list inside a Vincent chat and he reads it and tells you what to order from what is actually on the list. Open a chat, tap +, then Scan a Wine List.

🍷 Nothing is added to your collection. Scanning a list is a recommendation, not an import — no bottles, no wines, no records. If you want to keep what you drank, write a review afterwards.

Scanning the list

  1. Open a Vincent chat and tap + beside the message box.

  2. Tap Scan a Wine List — "Photograph a restaurant menu".

  3. Snap a photo of each page. The counter shows how many you have captured; tap Done when the pages you care about are in.

  4. Say what you are eating and what you want to spend, then send. This is the step that does the work — without it Vincent has a list and no brief.

Vincent chat → + → Scan a Wine List → photograph each page → Done → say what you want → send

You do not have to use the camera. Typing or pasting the lines out of a list works just as well — "2018 Caymus $24, NV Veuve Clicquot $28, what goes with oysters?" — which is often quicker for a short by-the-glass list.

What you get back

Tell him

What it gets you

The dish you have ordered

Picks weighed against the grapes, region and food pairings we hold for each wine.

A budget

Picks inside it. He reads the prices in the currency the list is printed in and does not convert them.

Nothing in particular

A general recommendation, drawing on whatever he already knows about what you like.

Each recommendation is checked against our wine catalogue, and he tells you where on the list to look — "page 3 under Bordeaux", "top of the by-the-glass list" — so you are not hunting for it at the table. A wine the catalogue cannot confirm is left out rather than guessed at, and if the photo is too dark or too cropped to read he says so and asks for a clearer one.

Asking again without re-photographing

The list stays in the conversation. Change your mind about the food, raise or lower the budget, or ask "what else is good on there" and Vincent works from the pages you already sent.

On each platform

Scan a Wine List and its multi-page camera are on iPhone and iPad. On Android and on app.invintory.com, do the same thing by hand: tap + in the Vincent chat, attach a photo of the list, and ask what to order. There is no dedicated wine-list option on those two, so say what you want in the message.
