How to name storages and sections well

Why a storage name should describe a place rather than a wine, how an import matches those names letter for letter, and why your sections arrive named Shelf 1.

Name a storage for the place it is rather than the wine you keep in it, get those names right before you import, and rename each section the moment you build it — because in the app you are never asked to name one.

Sections need a paid plan. Naming and renaming cellars and fridges works on every plan.

The place-not-the-wine rule is the whole of it: every other way of slicing a collection — region, grape, vintage, drink window, tag — is a filter you can apply whenever you like, so a storage called Bordeaux stops being true the first time it runs out of room. How to organise a cellar from scratch makes the same case at length.

An import reads your storage names letter for letter

A spreadsheet's cellar-or-fridge-name column is matched against the storages you already have, with no tidying up in between.

What is in the cell

What you get

A name you already use

The bottles land in that storage

The same name with different capitals or spacing

A second storage alongside the first

A name you do not have yet

A brand-new cellar — even if you meant a fridge

Nothing at all

A cellar called My Cellar

So settle the names first and the import files itself. Renaming afterwards is safe — it moves nothing and breaks nothing — but it will not merge two storages the import has already created. That is a bottle-moving job.

Your sections are named for you

Build a section from a storage's own screen and iPhone and iPad name it as they go: Shelf 1, Shelf 2 in a fridge, and Rack 1, Bin 1 or Case 1 in a cellar, counted separately per kind. There is no name step to fill in. Android and the web app ask for a name up front instead.

Rack 3 tells you nothing when you are standing in front of the racks, so rename while you still know which is which. Every section carries a Rename item in its menu, on the build screen and afterwards.

Open a storage → the section's ⋯ → Rename

Only your first ten storages reach the home screen

The Cellars & fridges section on Home shows ten cards and no more; the rest are behind Edit in that section's header. The order belongs to the collection rather than to you, so everyone sharing it sees the same one — put the storages you open daily at the front.

Where to rename

  • A cellar or fridge — swipe left on it in the storages list and tap Edit, or open it and use ⋯ → Edit.

  • A section — the menu on the section itself.

Both need editor access on the collection.
