How to create Sections in your Storage

Organize your cellars and fridges by adding racks, bins, and wine cases — the building blocks for VinLocate 3D tracking.

After you've created a cellar, you'll create sections for that storage.

Sections are a contiguous part of a cellar, meaning a part that looks the same, with the same layout and consistent column and row configuration. When you start to build out your storage on VinLocate, you'll likely need to separate it out into a few different sections.

On Premium:

  • You build your storage (cellar or fridge) section by section

  • You can only view your cellar broken up by those section views

On Elite:

  • We build the sections for you

  • You see all the sections stitched together into 1 complete cellar view

Sections are the organizational units inside your cellars and fridges — racks, bins, shelves, and wine cases. Adding sections lets you track exactly where each bottle is stored and is the foundation for VinLocate's 3D cellar visualization.

What Are Sections?

Think of sections as the physical structures inside your storage. There are three types:

Type

Best For

Description

Rack

Wine racks, shelving units

Individual positions for single bottles, arranged in rows and columns

Bin

Storage bins, cubbies

Larger compartments that hold multiple bottles together

Wine Case

Wooden cases, boxes

A single case of wine stored as one unit

Creating a Section

Storage settings showing existing sections with occupancy and options to create new ones

  1. Open any cellar or fridge from the home screen

  2. Tap the gear menu or navigate to the storage settings

  3. Under Sections, tap Create

  4. Choose the section type (Rack, Bin, or Wine Case)

  5. Give it a name and configure the dimensions (rows, columns, and depth)

  6. Tap Create to add it to your storage

The dimensions you set determine the number of bottle slots in the section. For example, a rack with 5 rows and 10 columns creates 50 individual bottle positions.

Managing Sections

Each section in the list shows its name, type, a thumbnail image, and how full it is. Tap the menu button on any section for options:

  • Modify — Change the section's dimensions or configuration

  • Rename — Give the section a new name

  • Move up / Move down — Reorder sections within the storage

  • Add bottles — Navigate to the section to place wines

  • Duplicate — Create a copy with the same configuration

  • Delete — Remove the section (bottles keep their data but lose their position)

Sections and VinLocate

Sections are the building blocks of your 3D cellar in VinLocate. Each section's rows, columns, and depth define the 3D grid where you place bottles. Once sections are set up, you can:

  • See your entire cellar as an interactive 3D model

  • Place bottles into specific slots by tapping positions

  • Find any bottle instantly with the VinLocate search

Tips

  • Name descriptively — "Top Rack" and "Bottom Shelf" are clearer than "Section 1" and "Section 2" when you're looking for a bottle.

  • Match your physical layout — Set the row and column counts to match the actual positions in your rack or shelf. This makes the 3D view accurate.

  • Start simple — You can always modify dimensions later. Add a section, try it out, and adjust.

  • Duplicate for repeating layouts — If you have multiple identical shelves, create one and duplicate it instead of configuring each from scratch.
